What Is Wire Rope Socketing?

Wire rope socketing is a manufacturing process used to create an extremely strong termination at the end of a steel wire rope.

A Closer Look at the Socketing Process

This technique permanently secures the wire rope into an open spelter socket, closed spelter socket or socket with clevis, creating an anchorage point capable of safely transmitting high tensile loads.

Socketing is primarily used for wire ropes employed in lifting, material handling and pulling applications. It is commonly found on cranes, winches, overhead cranes, industrial equipment, offshore installations and marine applications.

Unlike a simple swaged termination, socketing provides a highly efficient connection, making it particularly suitable for heavy loads and demanding operating conditions. The process begins by preparing the end of the wire rope. The strands and wires are opened and separated to form a broomed end.

The prepared end is then inserted into the socket. The socket is filled with a specialised socketing resin or, depending on the process used, with a molten metal alloy. Once the compound has cured, the wires are permanently locked inside the socket. This creates an exceptionally strong termination that efficiently transfers tensile loads while preventing the wire rope from slipping.
